Knock knees, crooked teeth and pigeon toes.

Why are Japanese girls all so incredibly pigeon toed? E@L asks, with a dash of hyperbole. It's a question most visitors to Japan ask themselves at some time or other. E@L is certainly not the first Western male to be distracted by Japanese school girls and their mysterious ways.

Here at Team Headley we sometimes take time off from bringing down military juntas and solving global warming problems to do some research into oriental phenomena ourselves...especially as they pertain to saucy female fashions. Knock knees, crooked teeth and pigeon toes seem to be all the rage in Japan among a certain subsection of the population and we have discovered that the reasons are less genetic than cultural, though there may be something called oh-legs at work. A treatable condition.

And let's not overlook the 'cuteness' factor...something the Japanese call kawai or harajuku. Japanese children are introduced to cuteness at an early age.

Those interested in further research on the subject are urged to visit quirkyjapan and everything2.

I dunno marshmallow. I think a lot of guys are as puzzled as you are. It seems to be a Japanese girl thing.

Trivial Mr. Large? That site has brought a lot of comfort to the o-legged. I am being inundated with e-mails.

Is it an old Japanese man thing?

I was going to ask why are they pigeon toed but I think it's a bit of a dumb and embarrasing question.

If a similar thing happened in the West i.e sexy school uniforms as everyday attire, one would probably think in terms of old men, spanking etc. but I think there is more going on here. Quite what it is I don't know. I've never spent much time in Japan. I'd have to wear blinkers there these days I think to avoid the dirty old man category.

Kawai is an adjective-and yes there is a concerted effort of some girls to look kawai. You will never hear a Japanese person describe the look as Harajaku. That's a place where kawai girls hang out.

I don't think Japanese girls are pigeon toes-but they spend a lot of time trying to keep their legs together because of the skirts they wear....and guys like me who are trying to look up them.

Ah so Harajuku is a place. Thank you skippy-san. And the girls wear short skirts in order to look kawai and presumably they are pleased when older men try to get a look at their knickers. Perhaps this also explains the groping on subways I've heard so much about.

DH, I believe the correct spelling is kawai'i, as it is pronounced ka-why-ee (like the US state, but with a K instead of a H). Without the apostrophe, one would just want to double the length of the vowel (eeee) instead of saying two instances of it.

Kawai makes musical instruments and is not cute AFAIK. But the instruments are OK.

Oh, and I'm glad you like the pix :p

Dan baby! Thanks for the alliteration. And I would gladly have given you credit for the school uniform pics but I wasn't sure you wanted it...not with it being posted 'elsewhere' and all.

No worries, matey. Doubtful anyone else visits both places. I have been tempted to tell the story about why I bought that on my blog, but it really isn't a "framily" story LOL!

But it was sure fun...

It's not the skirts - ! I have noticed the pigeon toe thing too. There must be a logical explanation - diet, culture (everyone does it), being made to walk at too early an age, flat feet? I could go on. But I won't.

PS: It's not just a girl thing - I've seen Japanese men walking like this too.

I think more research is needed on this question of Japanese girl's legs. I'd do it myself but I'd get pegged for a dirty old man. A bit of input from some young dudes might be helpful...I know you're out there.

if you ask me it looks like they constantly need to pee. next time you see someone standing like that i suggest you point them to the nearest bathroom.
